Daniel Shperber

Staff Sergeant | 6 October 2003 to 7 October 2023 | Age: 20

About Daniel

“You don’t have to be happy to laugh.”

These were the words Daniel’s friends chose to describe him. Quiet and modest, he was intelligent, kind-hearted and principled, with a wonderful sense of humor and a gift for finding the positive and lifting the people around him.

Daniel was born on October 6, 2003, in Yehud-Monosson, the eldest son of Liat and Gil. To his family, he was Dandush, their beloved firstborn. He was particularly close to his mother, a caring son and grandson, and a loyal friend.

He was the older brother of Noam and had two younger half-brothers, Ati and Eve. His bond with Noam was especially close. Daniel protected him, listened to him, advised him and shared his own life with him. They were brothers, but they were also friends.

Daniel grew up and studied in Yehud-Monosson, graduating with distinction. Determined, hardworking and deeply motivated, he refused to give up on himself even when things were difficult. His joy for life and humor made him deeply loved by his family, friends, teachers and commanders.

The Life He Loved

Daniel loved the sea and swimming pools, travelling abroad, horror movies, computer games and working out at the gym. He was a devoted Maccabi Haifa supporter, and his friends knew him for always knowing the newest trends.

His music ranged from Omer Adam and Pe’er Tasi to Israeli rap. His favourites included schnitzel, cheese bourekas, French fries, chraime, snacks, Monster energy drinks and watermelon-flavoured Breezer.

Above all, Daniel loved spending time with his friends and family. He loved life itself.

Serving with Pride

On March 29, 2022, Daniel enlisted in the IDF’s Border Defense Corps. He served as an observation-balloon combat soldier in the 414th “Nesher” Battalion, within the Combat Intelligence Collection unit.

He spent most of his military service at the Pega outpost. Approximately a month and a half before October 7, he was transferred to the Nahal Oz outpost.

Daniel was proud to be a combat soldier and saw great meaning in his role. He loved his military service and the members of his team, the friendships they built and the experiences they shared.

The Morning Everything Changed

On October 6, 2023, Daniel celebrated his twentieth birthday at the base.

His mother and Noam came to celebrate with him. Before leaving, his mother asked his fellow soldiers to continue celebrating with him that evening. They did, and Daniel spent his birthday surrounded by his friends.

The following morning, October 7, Nahal Oz came under attack. Daniel and four members of his observation-balloon unit fought alongside other forces against hundreds of Hamas terrorists.

Vastly outnumbered, they fought with extraordinary courage, holding back the attackers and helping save lives. They continued fighting until their ammunition was gone. Daniel and the four soldiers with him were killed in the battle.

He had turned twenty the day before.

Daniel was posthumously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and laid to rest in the military section of the Yehud-Monosson cemetery.

Remembering Daniel

In Yehud-Monosson, Derech HaHoresh Square was designated “Dreams Square” (Kikar HaChalomot) in Daniel’s memory. It represents both the dreams he fulfilled during his short life and those he never had the chance to pursue. A memorial in his honour was also planned there.

His family remembers a beautiful, modest and warm-hearted young man, a beloved son, brother, grandson and friend whose absence remains immeasurable.

To those who loved him, he will always be Dandush. His warmth, humor, determination and love for life remain with the people who knew him.
